TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice will be remembered later this week at a memorial service at the Terre Haute Police Department headquarters.
The Fallen Officers Ceremony will take place on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
THPD Sergeant Justin Sears said his department will be joined by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office and the Seelyville Town Marshal to participate in an Honor Guard ceremony.
The names of fallen officers will be read aloud publicly during the event.
Sgt. Sears said between THPD and VCSO, there have been a total of 20 officers who have died in the line of duty. He said the public is encouraged to attend to show their support.
“When we have these ceremonies, to have the public show up, it just reinvigorates us,” Sears said. “We’re not alone, we’re doing it for those people. To see the turnouts that we usually have, it just gives you that overwhelming feeling that you’re appreciated and that means a lot.”
Sears said on May 15 there will be a wreath ceremony as part of Peace Officers Memorial Day at THPD HQ. During the ceremony the Honor Guard will stand watch over the wreath from 4 p.m. until midnight.
Sears said during the ceremony, residents are encouraged to stop by and drop off donations, or say a quick prayer of support.
