SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) โ UPDATE: Due to a scheduling conflict, Governor Braun did not make it to the opening, and instead, Suzanne Jaworowski, the Indiana Secretary of Energy and Natural Resources showed up.
On Wednesday, Indiana DNRโs largest conservation project in 20 years officially opened.
The Busseron Creek and Wildlife Area is 3,950 acres of permanently protected land in Sullivan County, which includes forest, woodlands, marshes, swamps, lakes, and grasslands. The DNR said this land will provide a major habitat for local turkey, deer, waterfowl, and other species. DNR has established hunting units, parking areas, and access trails, and plans to continue adding infrastructure to improve visitor accessibility. The DNR said that the area will be a prime spot for wildlife viewing, hunting, trapping, fishing, and foraging, and will be open for use during the spring turkey hunting season.
โAnother place for people to come out and enjoy nature, and you know the conservation that the DNR and so many people throughout the state really kind of concentrate on and work on,โ said DNR Director Alan Morrison. โAnd so many people came together to make this happen.โ
For over 30 years, the DNR leased the property as part of the Minnehaha Fish and Wildlife Area but in 2016 the owner declined to renew the lease, and the area was shut down. The land was then purchased by the DNR for $10.8 million in 2024.
